About chaosDNS:
A dynamic DNS client script for any flavour of Zeta/BeOS.
It's fast. It's powerful. It's easy. It's streamlined. It's sleek. It's setting your computer free from the evils of Dynamic IP. It's chaosDNS.com.
Ever wanted to run a web site (or other service) from your home computer, but haven't been able to because you don't have a DNS server, or your IP address keeps changing? With chaosDNS.com's Dynamic DNS and URL Redirection services, you can accomplish that for free. Do you want to do that with your own .com or other top-level Domain Name? With Domain Registration and DNS Hosting, chaosDNS.com can help you do that too.
chaosDNS.com provides Dynamic DNS, Free .yi.org hostnames, Domain Registration, and other services that help you put your websites online and manage your servers without having to constantly jot down pesky IP addresses. Sign up for a free chaosDNS.com account and get started.
Installation instructions (included in .zip):
1) Unzip file to /boot. This is very important.
This puts 4 files on your system:
/boot/home/config/bin/updateip.sh (main script)
/boot/home/config/bin/test-net.sh (test routine)
/boot/home/config/etc/updateip.conf (settings)
/boot/home/Desktop/readme.chaosDNS (this file)
2) Add the 2 lines below to the end of your UserBootscript (/boot/home/config/boot/UserBootscript).
# Launch updateip.sh
/boot/home/config/bin/updateip.sh
3) Go to http://chaosdns.com/ or http://yi.org/ and sign up for a free or commercial dynamic DNS account.
4) Edit the settings file updateip.conf (/boot/home/config/etc/updateip.conf).
There you specify your hostname and password you used to sign up.
5) Reboot. A dialog box will appear with the status of the IP update.
You will get a choice to 'abort' or 'retry' should a failure have occurred.
Notes:
Depending on your version of BeOS/Zeta your perl binary may be in a different place.
Currently this script looks for perl in /boot/home/config/bin.
If your perl sits somewhere else create a symlink from there to /boot/home/config/bin.
Alternatively, specifiy the full path to perl in updateip.sh.
Please report all problems to chaos@chaosdna.com, your feedback is very important.
Top level domains are available as well.
Set your TTL to a higher number than 300 seconds unless you plan to move around a lot.
chaosDNS.com is a sister site of chaosdna.com
yi.org is a partner of chaosDNS.com.
