August 21, 2005:
As some of you have no doubt noticed, BeBits was up and down a few times in the last couple of days. On saturday one of Marvin's data drives failed, which promptly caused a kernel panic resulting in the entire system halting. The server was down for several hours until it could be reset - at which point it rebooted and happily crashed again. After bribing it with some fresh diodes, Marvin decided to play nice and boot back up without crashing and with no data loss.
Luckily we had recently purchased and started configuration of some new hardware with the intention of upgrading old Marvin with state of the art computing machinery and an upgraded OS. The server BeBits is being served from now is actually our brand new Marvin! The setup includes one 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 with 2GB of RAM and two SATA hard drives in a RAID-1 configuration. You may experience a hiccup or two over the next couple of days while little odds and ends are migrated to this new server and the DNS propagates, but after that it should be smooth sailing for a long time to come.
This wonderful upgrade comes to us because of the great community support we've received over the years via generous donations and ad revenue. Thanks for helping keep BeBits alive!
