I'm impressed. At last.
Good picture quality, synced sound, working seeking. Low processor load.
Tried with 2 overlay-capable cars - Vodoo 3 2000 and Radeon 32 DDR.

Though, too sad, that native "media-OS" tools are unable to do same things well.

Everything Works!

Am BeOS Newbie coming from Windows ME. Was pleasantly surprised how easy apps are to download and install with BeOS!!

Yesterday downloaded and installed VideoLan client Was amazed that everything works so far. Tried to compare it to my Windows PowerDVD 2.55 at 800 x 600 using a 16X DVD Player. The picture was fine for both.

I'm having the same problem as BiPolar. just with the last two builds of the cvs though. The first one dated 2002.11.23 works quite wonderfully. I aswell don't have overlay support, but am pretty sure thats just my TNT2 graphics card.

Still great work, keep it up :^)

That's it, I run the Unstable version under Dano.
The app looks very nice, but all my videos (divx, mpeg) are shown with what is an almost green palette,
not to mention those ugly big blocks. The rendering was in Bitmap mode (non Vesa driver, but it seems I have no overlay sopport).

Anyway... keep up the good work!

<quote>Also what's the difference / advantage / disadvantages of bitmap vs. overlay?
On my BeOS machine at work (pII 350, matrox PCI vga) it runs fine ( by default on overlay mode and can be changed in terminal mode to bitmap.</quote>

The really big advantage is the the original image, unscaled and with out color space manipulation (eg YUV to RGB) is copied to the video card. The video then scales and converts the image itself. This saves all of this work being done on the CPU. Also many cards allow two or more overlay images to be created allowing the program (vlc in this case) to do "backbuffer" drawing, when required the images are toggled giving extremly fast frame changes.
That is where the saving is. BeOS's direct window allows you to send data directly to the video card but it must be pre-scaled and the correct color space.

What driver are you using for it? VESA by any chance? Supposedly the Unified NVidia Driver on BeBits supports overlay, never had the chance to try myself though (no nVidia cards).

<quote>Also what's the difference / advantage / disadvantages of bitmap vs. overlay?

Overlay mode, as I understand it, writes data directly to the video card as opposed to using the OSes standard drawing method. It is, therefore, a LOT faster and less CPU-intensive. To give you an example, VLC on my P3 450 with the leaked 2d radeon driver (no overlay support) was pretty much unusable - dropped frames like mad and used 100% CPU. But with the newer OSS Radeon driver, it uses about 40% and the playback is nice-and-smooth.

By the way... The problem with VideoLan in Max is the LocaleTracker. If you compile VLC again on a system using LocaleTracker, it works. I have done it and will post a VLC 4.6 for MAX as soon as I can.

I know it's a problem with XP because all our Mellinium, and Window's 98 versions work fine. Looking for a solution.

You could also (if you know how to do this) compile it with debug symbols and run it in the Be Debugger, as I have never seen such a crash and I cannot reproduce it.

memcpy behaviour with different codecs

Tony,
on my k6/2 system (k6/2 @ 500MHz, MGA Mystique 4MB, stock BeOS 5.03) i've noticed that both mmx and 3dnow memory copy modules (memcpymmx and memcpy3dn, respectively) don't work with ffmpeg-handled video streams (i.e. anything wich goes through ffmpeg) and BView/BBitmap-based output. The video output is either not there, or is updated sporadically (sound output being fine). The same two memcpy modules work fine with mpeg1 streams under the same output (BView/BBitmap). <wild quess> Could it be a matter of mmx/3dn state non- initialization/de-initialization and conflict with ffmpeg's own mmx code (if any, that is)? </wild quess>

vlc doesn't use the BeOS MediaKit, which is currently buggy for AVI parsing, so as it uses its own parser it can perform better.
Hope that'll be fixed in OBOS =)

For every new "file" item in the playlist, such settings like the language are not remembered. This only works in DVD mode, where it can be expected, that audio stream #2 would be French across the entire DVD in your case. When vlc plays individual files from hard disk, how can it expect that they are related?
Another problem is the naming of the streams. Many DVDs don't provide a readable name (it appears), and even if they do, they might differ for the same language. So it would be tricky to implement a setting, where you tell vlc your "preferred" language, so that it picks that one "automatically" for you. But I can see that this would be a cool feature if it can be made to work. However, I don't code on vlc at this level, I only work on the interface. If such a feature becomes available, I will try to make it easy to access it.

Hi,

for *every* AVI I tested (and I have a few), seeking works just fine. For AVIs that are not downloaded completely yet, seeking works differently, appearantly, vlc is zooming through the AVI until it finds the spot where you clicked. Might be that this behaviour looks flawed on slower computers. But it does indeed work on this one fast computer (P41.7GHz) I tested on.
Some codecs are not supported properly by vlc. That's when you can experience problems. You should run vlc from within a Terminal, and look for suspicious error messages.
Anyways, you should test with different AVIs, you should see that seeking works fine. Oh, there *is* sometimes a problem, where sound and video are out of sync after seeking, but it should work reasonably fine most of the times...

Regards,
-Stephan

maybe i'm too late with it but: YEAH! :D

only picture gets stops (plays, stops, plays, stops) and then it doesn't move at all, after seeking. after pause & play it's ok for a second or maybe shorter (maybe it depends on frames or something...) and than again it stops.

THX for great work.

About the single window interface, see one of my other comments.

Something else: I have been somewhat blurry about my recent improvements since the last BeOS only update. This version, 0.4.5, includes

- LCD type info view, appearance "configurable" via window size. Unfortunately, not all info is supported by all types of streams vlc can playback. For most AVIs not even the current time can be shown.
- drag'n'drop of cd-rom icons to open them in DVD mode.
- implementation of better settings handling. Aspect ratio correction, fullscreen setting, this stuff should now be remembered throughout a) program restarts and b) throughout different files playing. Let's say you have one file playing at fullscreen, which has an original resolution of 384x207, then comes another file with a different resolution. Previously, vlc would destroy the instance of the video output, and make a new one, if the new file had a different resolution. Meaning you would be switched back to the default settings. This is now much better handled. A problem remains for switching from DVD playback to normal file playback. Unfortunately the destruction and recreation of the output module overlap, loosing the current settings (reverting them to what was saved last).
- some memory leaks have been fixed, and code has been cleaned up.

Can somebody confirm that the LPCM sound is not broken anymore? There have been changes to that module before the release. Does this mean we have most issues mentioned in recent talkback comments sorted out?

Regards,
-Stephan

DVD menus already work (a bit) under Linux, it has to be ported to BeOS. There also already exists a "brightness" plugin, a guy here coded it a few weeks ago for its personnal use, put didn't put it in the CVS - I'll ask him not to be so egoist ;)

I very much like the the current interface, but I think it could be better if there was some way to combine the control window and the player window into one ... not sure quite how you would go about doing that, but perhaps maybe something similar to Be's MediaPlayer?

I most definately think Be has the best out of any VLC interface on any platform including MacOSX. Great job on it .. I really applaud you. There's always room for improvement, though.

Any idea on how DVD menu support is going with VLC? I know the team wants to work on it, but I have no idea if any work has started (and I understand just how difficult implementing such a thing is). Give me that and a way of adjusting gamma and I'll be a happy guy -)

All of the screenshots of VLC on videolan.org seem outdated. However, I agree about the tidy BeOS interface. You would always have to decide if something fits in, even if it's cool, because it might not work so well out of its context. Nevertheless, there might be interesting ideas in the other interfaces. It's just a matter of knowing what's there.
