The R5 Personal bootloader isn't something that's available in source code so it's not something anyone can modify to support new filesystems...you can try making a BeOS boot CD using the instructions on betips.net and using that to install BeOS on its own BFS partition though, or hold out for one of the open source BeOS alternatives to bear fruit.

Hello!
I want to give BeOS a try, but I am using the ResierFS filesystem for my Linux system (your bootloader only works with ext2). In anyone interested in implementing Resier support? Also, is it possible to use GRUB, or to put in all on a CD-R?
Thanks!

I installed BeOS5 on my Windows XP laptop (ie. as the executable) and created a boot floppy. The intructions say that I should restart then boot from the floppy. However, my computer does not automatically detect the floppy and display an error when trying to load the OS.
What do I do?

The repackeged stuff like BeOS Max edition is bad, it confuses new people to BeOS, it reduces simplicity, there is plenty of stuff for people new to BeOS to learn before, they get all the extra's and it shows, New people don't understand that this is not a official distrobution. and that Developers edition and Max edition will cause problems, when you repackage a distrobution, think about how it will affect new people
to many are just ending up frustrated these days.
we should stick with BeOS R5PE untill a OpenSource replacement
can take over.

The answer to this common Question is easy. You need Nero software, a CD-RW drive and a CD-r, and the ablilty to boot from a CD-ROM. You burn C:\BeOS\Floppy.img to the CD in El Torito (Bootable) Format. now, you can get to BeOS without a floppy!!!

This version supports i815, Athlons XP and comes with drivers for almost everything! Download from here (if doesn't works, pause and retry. Use a download program like getright:
http://www.devconone.com/befaq/max/BeOS5PEMaxEditionV2.rar
http://www.devconone.com/befaq/max/BeOS5PEMaxEditionV2.r00
to http://www.devconone.com/befaq/max/BeOS5PEMaxEditionV2.r10
Extract the zip file inside the rar volumes, extract the two imgs and burn a cd. If you have any problems contact me, but i'm not a pro!
Also I wish to know what would be better: the Official BeOS 5 Professional or an updated and fulled of programs BeOS 5 PE (5.03)?

Hi I could boot into BeOS5PEMaxEdition downloaded from don't-know-where and burned it on a cd, it took me to a BeOS installation. Personal edition didn't wanted me to boot (Athlon XP 1900+, MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU, 512 DDR333, Seagate 40GB ATA 100), but the installation DID work. My wireless USB keyboard/mouse doesn't work. It's a logitech Cordless iTouch Keyboard and a Cordless Mouseman Wheel. I don't have the usb-to-ps2 adapters right now so I couldn't continue with the installtion.
Also I have 3 ntfs partitions (winXP) and a fat32 partition. BeosPE (standart) didn't work on any of those.

I would highly recommend you try install BeOS PE on a FAT32 partition, not on a NTFS 5 one. Reportedly, BeOS boots off some machines with NTFS 5, but not on others. You are among the unlucky ones, it seems. BeOS was only tested against WinNT4 and Win2k's NTFS version, not WinXP's. So, I recommend you create a 1 GB FAT32 partition and put BeOS PE there...
Of course, the problem might be different in your case. It might be a BIOS issue (I hope you don't have a Phoenix BIOS), or that your IDE controller is not supported, or something else...

Your problem is not cured by an "Update" but actually a kernel hack.
You are running an out of date CPU, old-school POS processor that had a few severe bugs in its SSE/MMX implementation. My best advice to you is to upgrade, or downgrade.. just get rid of that old style P4 (you will need to swap motherboards).
OF COURSE... I doubt you want to *PAY* for doing that, so you rnext best bet is to find a hacked boot floppy image.
http://ozone-o3.net/ Download Ozone and come in and speak to the many kewl d00ds in the TyComSystems server (default). We will help you throw this, and maybe finally get a kit together that DOESN'T require you thirty thousand people running these crappy CPUs to use a different CPU to patch BeOS so you can run it on your crappy CPU.
Now.. a .pkg file is an archive which contains full, relative path information, and installer stub information. In short it is an installer in BeOS.. but more accurately it is an acrhive which contains full, relative path information, and installer stub information and stuff... which another app uses to install the materials from the archive.
It can only be read in BeOS AFAIK, but Winzip might be worth a try considering the coompression seems very zip-like and contains a '1f' compression algorithm (g/zip). But what do I know?
Anyway, drop by TyComSystems.. and as (don't ask before you ask.. just plainly ask three or four times until someone answers.. then tell 'The loon' sent ya... I'd suggest you then protect your IP..hehe... j/k.. they love me in there.. they just love it more when I leave..

Hi! When I run BeOS on my p4 1.5, a small cursor in the upper left corner of the screen flashes for a few seconds, then a command line 'kdebug' pops up. I read on the forum that updating 5.0 will fix this...and I unzipped the updates in windows & in linux...but how do I open the file type .pkg? (I assume that this can be done in windows/linux, since I apparently need to upgrade before BeOS will work w/the p4).
Any help is greatly appreciated :)

When I boot from the floppy disk there is a coloured flashing square in the top corner when the BeOS logo is displayed, then after about 10-15 seconds of this my PC reboots.!
I have an Abit KG7 Motherboard, AMD XP 1500+ chip

Can anyone help ??

1. i can't help - i don't know why it's like that, here it works :(
2. try StripZilla here on bebits (version for net_server if You didn't install any Betas from Be.inc) - it's mozilla without part of bloat ;]
and it works with polish coding.
Have You copied ttf font from windoze (i assume You have windoze too)?
That way You'll have fonts with polish signs.

On this page http://wiki.bebits.com/page/TvHowTo you can find out how to get audio working with your TV card (plus a few other things), if the instructions are a bit hard to follow, hop on BeShare and ask me. The Geforce driver is not open source and is no longer in development (it was developed by an engineer at Be, but since they are gone, so is the drivers development) I hope this helps, any other questions, don't hesitate to hop on Behare ( http://www.bebits.com/app/1330 ).
Oh and one other thing, checkout http://www.bebits.com/app/2289 for email, it rocks! (much better than using slow mozilla) You may also want to check out http://wiki.bebits.com/page/NewbieInfo too.

Just to let you know that under Mail-it is a very coll mail application close to eudora (multiuser...) up to you, and welcome in the large community of BeOS. One last thing the stuff like kazaa under beos is Beshare, but you can also chat with it and of course there are only beos user

OK I patched it and now it works ! Cool !
My geforce 2 gts works, my TV card, my i810
onboard sound chipset, very cool.
This is a very cool OS, I'm very very happy to be finally
up to use it ! It's now my primary OS !
A FEW QUESTIONS :
I had tu use a patch to make it work on my AMD Duron,
do I need the other path (enable SSE) to make things
faster (hum)
on me geforce 2 GTS the screen refresh is not very fast;
as under Linux, when you move a window above another,
it leaves awful marks. It that normal ???
BTW, are the nvidia driver still under development ?
Be does'nt want to give out any source ?
Apart from that everything works fine. Bezilla is a bit slow but
it's OK and very useful to share my mailbox with Linux and XP.
As I'm new to BeOS, are there particular things I have to know ?
BTW, I have the image with my Hauppauge BT 878 TV Card,
but I don't know how to get the sound !
Thanks to everyone !
