What would be the correct path(s) to use for installation?
Does anybody have a reasonable sure guess, or can even talk from experience?
Thanks!

This driver worked great for me. The paths of installation weren't exactly as listed, but I figured it out. The other driver for the S3 didn't work, in fact, it made Be unbootable. I removed it and installed this one and there was the color. BEautiful!
From a long time Windows/Mac user, Be is awesome!

NOT A WINDOWS WEBSITE.
This is a driver for this graphics card on the Be Operating System. Not Windows. Don't assume the world revolved around Redmond.

I just looked at those instructions again, and they were wrong. They're correct now. <blushes, hides>

OK, let's take this slowly.
1. Install in /boot/home/config/kernel/drivers/bin
Take the S3 driver and move it to the directory above. If that directory doesn't exist, create it first.
2. link to /boot/home/config/add_ons/app_server
From the newly-installed driver, make a link to the ~/config/add_ons/app_server directory. This is where the BeOS will look for the driver.
Hope that's clearer.

Those Installation instructions are part of the confusion.
"Install in /boot/home/config/kernel/drivers/bin
link to /boot/home/config/add_ons/app_server"
How does one "install" a driver, without an installation program or at least a script? If I copy a URL to an e-mail, have I just installed it? When you need to copy and paste a file, some text, or whatever, would you understand me if I told you to install it somewhere?
An' mo' dan dat, /boot/home/config/kernel/drivers/bin doesn't exist unless I create it, whereupon, of course it still doesn't work.
What did work for me was follow the instructions on the page brought up by the "more info" button (I think), but, of course, that refers to experimental drivers on a non-existent CD. Still I kept getting lockups after about 3 or 4 mouse clicks 'til I changed away from 640x480x16.

Thanks for the suggetion, somehow I had missed that whole section of Bebits. But..., it didn't work. I reinstalled R5PE, and got back to the dialog that says BeOS doesn't support my video card, and the suggestion there is to copy new drivers to boot/home/config/add-ons/app_server, then reboot.
Eureka!!! Colored screen at last!! And boot up only took half as long (this happened just seconds ago). I feel good nanananana...

I suppose you right click on the driver, go to Copy To and copy the driver to /boot/home/config/add-ons/kernel/drivers/bin.

Its great that someone has offered this driver, but without instructions I can't seem to make it work. I'm new at this whole BeOS thing so a step by step explanation would be helpful.

I have a problem with my beos, and I found more articles on the web about this, but never a solution.
I have a S3 Virge GX/DX and BEOS 5.03 PE
BEOS is on one harddisk and Win 2000 on the other HD.
I use the bootdisk to load.
Now the problem:
When i load normally, i get a "black screen" without any mouse or something.
When i load in safe mode, i get in but i only see a black and white screen.
Is there any solution? I saw the Byte Merge thing already but i'm running a DELL-BIOS which hasn't got this option.....
Thank you

If this ( http://www.bebits.com/app/202 ) does not work for you, then, you can't find such a driver nowhere. Get a supported graphics card. A cheap GeForce2 or a second hand 3Dfx Voodoo3 for example.

this is not the Savage 4 Drivers, hence why they do not work. I recommend if you want to use the Savage video card, that you do or have the following.
1. a actual Savage 4 video card <not some off brand variant>
2. a actual video card, not intergrated video.
3. do not atempt to use variant video cards, all of them will not work.

This S3 driver is old. It is NOT suitable for the Savage chipsets. It *may* work on some Virge, VirgeVX and GX, but not on the Savage ones.

Anyone know which S3 cards this driver will work for? I have a Toshiba laptop with "S3 Savage/IX w/MV" (according to windows) that has always given BeOS fits (must run in VESA - yecch). I'll try it anyway... Thanks, Mike.

Yeah, it is the same as far as I can see. When I got R3, I had problems with my mouse pointer and the old S3 driver. This was updated and fixed, never had problem after it.
