I could be talking out my butt but I would advise you guys stop buying these cards unless your dual booting. I don't think we are going to have openGL (Hardware side) till OBOS R2 so by then you could go by a Radeon 9XXX for like $30. Don't waste your money on this crap unless you have a windows partition to game in cuz right now an 8MB el cheapo ATI is more then enough for Be. I urge people to stop playing into this huge marketing trend & thats just what most video cards are right now. Cpu & a well balanced computer is more importnat the the latest $500 - $600 video card. A video card only does have the work & the CPU is left to do most physics & other calulations in games - Thus you can have the most bad ass Video card around but if your cpu can't keep up you have wasted your money. For instance a GeForce 2 of any model on a a k6-2 550 is a waste. Your average fps will be up but wait till the math starts in a fire fight & heavy Physics come into play on objects... oh yes your FPS will suck like you have never seen sucking... What happened I have this great video card!?#@... Who cares... cpu is more important or in a more intelligent light *BALANCE* is more important. All system parts must be equal or you end up with a bottle neck & a empty wallet falling for marketing hype for nothing. If you have a systems in the 500mhz area go with a tnt2 ultra, & unless you bought a computer & it came with a Radeon hold off... or buy one more scaled to balance out your system as opposed to the "Fastest mofo out!" We aren't building Muscle cars. If you want to pimp your rig out go waste your money on Cold Cathode lighting & Window mods for now & leave trendy video cards for next year...

Future Radeon cards

What about updating the driver for the coming Radeon 9XXX graphics cards?
If its possible to create an open source graphics driver for the 8500, it must be possible for the 9XXX (preferably 9700) too.

If such a driver is feasible, I will purchase the Radeon 9700 graphics card!

They should work

I suggest that you try it, and if it workes or not report that to the author of this drivers
Good luck!

You're a guru. Not that I discover this just now ;-)

With the updated Matrox Gx00 open source driver, you make the gfx cards BeOS 2d support percent climb to, what, like 75% now!
We all knows how the last 25% (nVidia) will be hard to get :-(.
But we all knows which gfx manufacters we should support/buy their products, right? ;-)

However, do you plan place this driver source into OpenBeOS CVS sometime?

DVI did not work with my R7500

The driver works (at least that's what I think, after the screen goes black, my HDD continues working and the startup-sound is still there), but apparently the DVI output on my Radeon 7500 (powered by ATI) is not enabled by default. Is there any way to get it to work?

Anyway, thanks for creating that driver!

Problems with a Radeon 7500...

FYI,

I thought I would post my experiences even though I've been in direct communication with Thomas Kurschel (topical) and he's looking into the problem...

My Radeon 7500 will completely crash the appserver on my Abit VP6. The computer will not even make it through the boot process. If I enable console debugging, I can see the appserver die, and have passed along the stack trace to Thomas.

I have a similar setup to you, Asus P3C-D with dual 850e's and 512MB PC800 Rdram.
The v2.2 driver is working fine in SMP mode for me.

Have you had success with this newer version of the Radeon driver?

Thanks for your time & help

If you look at what is installed you will notice that the new drivers are called radeon2 not radeon so removing those named radeon is fine..

Misleading installation instructions?
 By 7 - Posted on July 23, 2002 - 09:11:52   (#2327)
Current version when comment was posted: v2.2
The following text:

remove any radeon driver left on your system; the safest way is to move the kernel driver to another place, i.e. search
for radeon (usually under /boot/home/config/add-ons/kernel/driver/bin) and move it to your home folder (just renaming it
but leaving the file in the original folder doesn't work!)

Seems to imply that you should remove any radeon drivers in your home/config/... tree after you install.

Wouldn't this result in you removing the radeon driver that you just installed?

I think that the instructions may need to be re-ordered so that you remove the old drivers before you install the new one.

It is also of note that the drivers in /boot/beos/system/... will not be used if one is found in your home/config/...

HTH!

@sponge:

if you set resolution at startup + select fail-safe mode, you are using the (slow) vesa driver. the ati driver does not start!

when you don't select the vesa mode, your display is distorted: the same problem i have with the ati driver

Thanks!

Thanks for the work so far!

It sorta works with my Radeon 7200 (64MB) in my desktop, IF I set my video to 800x600 on bootup. Otherwise, it looks all messed up. If I try to change my screen resolution from the default 640x480, it slows to a crawl.

I'd love to get my hands on the source code soon to work on making it more compatible with my card! :)

Nice..

Slowdowns
 By topical - Posted on July 17, 2002 - 13:17:49   (#2239)
Current version when comment was posted: v2.1
It seems like many people have the following problem: after some time drawing gets very slow. I had the same problem one time. It looks like the graphics card locks up: if you take a look into syslog you'll find loads of time outs (driver waits for graphics card to become ready, timeouts, resets the card and tries again). After executing one draw instruction, the graphic card locks again. I have no clue why this happens and try to narrow the problem. So, stay tuned.

Drawing slows down

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8100 with 64 Meg Radeon 7500 Mobility (id 4c57).

The driver works flawlessly at first, but then after half an hour or so (possibly sooner), the display starts having problems drawing quickly, and eventually slows down to a crawl for refresh.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Apparently doesn't work that perfectly, unfortunately.
You can see my equipment from the previous post, radeon 8500 and samsung LCD monitor.

As time goes by, the drawing of the windows deteriorates... to a point when the windows don't update anymore and after a few secs the screen goes to sleep mode, or stand-by, forcing me to reboot.

I'm putting together a new machine, i'll report to see if it still happens in that new one. Right now i'm running a celeron 400, on an Intel mobo.

Works great

System Randomly Locks Up on SMP Asus P3C-Dual MB.

My system randomly locks up when I use the Radeon Driver. (Even the one from Dano). I have an Asus P3C-Dual MB with 2 PIII 667EB and 256MB PC800 Memory.
The system runs fine with my Voodoo Banchee PCI or ATI Rage 128 AGP Video cards. Note: The Dano driver doesn't need the Gama setting. The display is Great, just randomly locks up.

SMP dual processor problems

The driver seems to work with my Radeon All-in-Wonder 8500 128MB card but the mouse doesn't work on either of my Tyan Tiger 100 (dual 400MHz Celerons)or 133 (dual 800MHz PIII) systems when using the driver. On the other hand, on a single processor system like a Compaq Deskpro EN (866MHz PIII)everythings fine. Anyone else having mouse problems on SMP systems?

Screen blanking/Burn

Occasionaly whilst running this driver my screen is going black and no key press or mouse movement brings the picture back. I have been having to power cycle to continue work. I suspect this is due to power saving on a laptop which Be does not support the power save on.

On one occasion I noticed the text of a new window appear but not the actual window itself. No frame decor or anything. Then seconds later my screen started a kind of bleach effect. This is similar to an effect I was getting if I booted Dano with it's radeon drivers.

Other than these issues I am quite happy with this driver now. Good work. It is nice to know there is version available with source. My desktop runs a Radeon card as well.

If the driver finds a TFT panel connected to the graphics card, the resolution and refresh rate is fixed to the native resolution/refresh of the panel. Simple reason: the VGA output for an external CRT and the built-in panel are controlled by the same unit, e.g. if you change the refresh rate of the CRT, the panel would be affected as well. This is a bad idea, as panels are "fixed-sync". If I knew how to disable the panel, I could enable changing resolution/refresh rate, but I don't :(

Zor Prime: do you have a Radeon LE (don't know about this card) or a "Rage 128 Mobility LE"? If you are in doubt, please mail me its PCI ID.

Not entirely sure whether driver is actually working as changing res from preferences is having no effect. But since this is a laptop i.e. panel not crt and based on comments about the first version which I am not sure whether they apply or not I am prepared to assue this is working. Any simple test to confirm?

Still weird affect on boot has gone so I can safely test now.

Thanks for the work done so far.

Hey dude, from what you described it seems more likly that the problem is your app_server or its settings. I have had this a few times. 2 things to do nuke your app_server & replace with a fresh copy off the cd & then delete the settings file for it. If you still lock with the blue screen at boot replace your tracker - deskbar & libtracker.so. My money is on the app_server settings.

Be careful with this

I have a Radeon Mobility chip and this left my system unusable. Even booting safe mode doesn't work. Booted a secondary be partition and removed radeon2 files and it still doesn't work. Hmm interesting. It gets as far as bringing up a blue background and the hand cursor then after a while the hand cursor locks in place and it doesn't get any further

Could you let us know the chip id that you have so people know which systems this is expected to work with. From windows my Chip is an M6(LY) chip id 1002-4C59-02 with 8 Meg and 350Mhz DAC

Just going to try reinstalling to try and get this booting again.

GL and overlay
 By rudolfc - Posted on July 4, 2002 - 14:47:08   (#2113)
Current version when comment was posted: v2.0
Hmm,

If you are evenly sure about overlay and GL, then there might be GL driver docs after all ;-)
(Though it will be only usable for DANO..)

About overlay: I just implemented this on the opensource (open)BeOS/FoFt Matrox driver! I must confess, all I had to go on was a single headerfile. But it's doable, though it cost me a lot of time testing it, determining the way it works, and building it (2 months or so)!

Of course: Now anyone can copy it and modify the card-register specific parts for any specific videocard. Better yet: please do! ;-)

Anyway: It's reported working OK on R5.0.3 and DANO.

Interested? Get the sources from my site:
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/be-hold/BeOS/Matrox.html

Look at:
-overlay.c
-mga_bes.c
-video_overlay.h (*this* is the Be header file ;-)

Rudolf Cornelissen.
