it's easy to repatch Kernel after installing BONE on AMD ;)

thanks to vasper! here are the instructions step-by-step (from http://www.vasper.net/boneIssues.htm):

1. install Max from pre-installed image (just unzip and copy to X:\BeOS\image.be (fat32) or /BeOS/image.be (ext2)) and create a boot floppy
2. Boot to the preinstalled system by boot floppy
3. Install Max to it's fix place (rather: BeFS partition) by Installer found in the preinstalled image.
4. Boot to your new system
5. Install the BONE on your new system
6. Reboot to preinstalled system again (by boot floppy)
7. Mount your newly installed systems partitions or image
8. Open [image]/beos/system/kernel_inel on that by DiskProbe
9. Find the _second_ occurence of "GenuineIntel" (without quotes) and change it to "AuthenticAMD" (be pedant: it's case sensitive!)
10. Alt+Q and Write it.
11. Reboot to your installed and boned system and wonder it works fine

Correction: Maybe it was 8 different version of AbiWord

I am not quite sure, but let's say that I was suckered into trying it one time too many.

AbiWord

I might be jinxed, but AbiWord never ever worked for me. It crashes in very strange ways, and it's really useless for opening almost any Word document. But wait, it's also useless for most of the RTF documents I tried to open with it. And while trying to open and sometimes while trying to save some of the stuff, it often crashes.

After trying 7 different versions I came to the conclusion that unfortunately, somehow, I manage to get the worst out of AbiWord. A little bit like my experience with Gnome.

Bone brake down on Athlon XP

If you install Bone on an Athlon XP you replace the patched kernel with the new from Bone (not patched) thus creating this reboot problem. You have to patch the Bone kernel too.

Max Editions conflict BONE on Athlon XP

I have tried both ME2 and ME2.1 on my AMD and found it works at all. The new patch in 2.1 is really good.

As you know there are a huge number of software that only be able to run with BONE. It's not a problem on Intel processor based (so called "Intel patch" based ME) system but installing BONE brakes down - i think - the AMD kernel patch. This couses system reboot while BeOS loading (bootscreen).

In fact ME2.0 installer was able to manage this problem by reinstalling the "new amd patched kernel" package. It hurts me ME2.1 is unable to do the same.

Beam and Mail-it

Well, I was using mail-it, since it's a more complete
application. Then I switched to BEAM, since:
- Mail-it takes FOREVER to start. Beam starts in about 1/2 second (if not less).
- Mail-it has PLENTY bugs (I had to recache folders every now and then, since they got messed up very frequently)

Beam works like a charm (well. almost ;) here. I can't say that about Mail-It (it had many bugs). Also Beam has much more "BeOS feeling", but that depends on user probably.

What was the error when Beam crashed? I've had nothing but great luck with it, even running all the alphas and betas for testing. I'm sure the author would love to recieve some feedback about the problems you are having.

Beam ? Are you serious ?

Beam crashes everytime I run it. Mail-it is heaps better plus it's source has just been given to BeUnited :)

Beam rulez! ;]

It would be better to include Beam instead of Mail-It IMHO.

need FTP option for download

HTTP is not ideal for this large of a download. Every single SourceForge mirror I've tried appears to HTTP-only. Please provide an FTP option, and preferably one which offers resume functionality. Downloads will be faster and more people will be able to access the image files. Thanks.

Patch?

Isn't it possible to release some sort of service pack or patch that adds the new things and updates the old, because it's not that easy to download such a big file each time a new version is released

He was wondering if printing works from ABI word in Max Edition, also from the looks of the screen shot there is still a newer ABI word out for BeOS.
