Broadcom LAN-Driver 440x10/100 BCM4401-B0

Hello all, I use an Broadcom 440x 10/100 BCM 4401-B0
Networkcontroller.

The Vendor code is: 0x14E4 and the Device is: 0x170C

Strange my Network is not supported. Maybe it has something to do with the second Wireless LAN Device from Intel (Vendor: 0x8086 Device: 0x4222) which is listed in my Zeta-Info before the Broadcom Networkdriver.

How to disable the Wireless LAN Driver? Maybe the Broadcom driver will work then?

Heya, after a long time of testing each new version released I actually thought to read this list. Turns out that moving the driver to the system driver directory (as opposed to the user one) made everything work just fine. I'm getting the same problem with it shutting down as the post below, but that's only a minor niggle. HTH anyone stuck :)

Kill NetServer on Shutdown

Hi Nathan,

i am really happy with your Driver now.
Works great!

Only one thing bothers me.
Every time i shutdown BeOS R5 the NetServer dosn't quit automatically. I always have to kill it.
Do you have an idea what it can be that makes NetServer stay alive? ;-)

Thank you a lot! I disabled "Plug&Play OS installed" in BIOS and the network card was assigned IRQ 10, it was properly recognized and then networking started working like a charm, magically! I'm writing this from NetPositive, which I think uses net_server, isn't it?

do device preferences show IRQ assigned to "Ethernet"?
If not, that's a BIOS not BeOS setting problem

It's not working on BeOS Max

Like one person before this post, when I look into device prefs I get this for 'Ethernet':
Vendor: 0x14e4
Card ID: 4401
I double click the driver installer, go to network prefs and click Restart Network, but no interface appears on the list. I've tried moving to drivers to where Intel 810 are, in /system/add-ons/...; but no luck.
I'm sorry I'm a BeOS newbie and I just don't know which network stack does Beos Max use. Is there any "manual" way of starting networking?

Last version 3.0.8a is more compatible than before as i could used LAN or WIFI (bcm2200bg 0.5) under Zeta after booting on the right profile. I could not used both at the same time or change profil without rebooting. But Zeta doesn't hang anymore now... :-)

sorry, i wasn't clear enough in meaning that even though haiku will have a BSD-like network stack, it wont be on _many_ people's computers for a while ( between it reaching maturity, people waiting for a complete R1, people not migrating to Haiku, ... )

In other words, although this will ( or at least most likely will ) work on Haiku, dev's ( in general ) shouldn't abandon R5, at least not yet :)

net_server addons will not be needed on Haiku, so it won't be needed for net_server compatibility - unless you want to use R5's pref panel. Which won't work anyway....

<nudge>Even though Haiku's network stack will be BSD-like, there will still be a need for net_server compatability.

Aside from the issue of Haiku's networking kit not being 100% complete, additional time will be needed for R1 to be released.

hope this helps motivate you, NathanW or any able driver dev. We all know you do good work, but it's always good to remind people :) </nudge>

The add-on is built using the etherpci net_server add-on module, with the strings in etherpci.h changed. As I have no test computer, I can't really fix this, and I also have no idea why this isn't working.

Ok, I understand it may be really difficult but can you please just try???? I have the computer, you send me the stuff you need to run on it and we'll see how it goes from there. It's not hard to put some debugging/logging code into your driver (you even have some in there commented out already) to see if things work or not at specific places in the code. So the card is not transmitting packets correctly, that narrows down the search alot, let's start with that. I would then test it and send you back the log.

Clearly, the interface is detected and initialized, but no packets are transmitted -- for no reason I or the several people I have asked can discover.

We need to work together on this, don't just give up. There are alot of other users who want net_server support as well, this card is used often in new laptops and it should be fixed.

Anyone got this working in net_server?

If anyone got this to work in net_server please tell me how you installed it????????

If not, NathanW can you please fix this! Bone doesn't work on my laptop and this is incredibly frustrating. All it would require is for you to put alot of debug info in the driver and send the driver to me, I'll test it and send you back a log. You should be able to see where it fails and fix the problem.

I've tried hacking the driver so it only works in half-duplex, 10mbit (which is my setup) but it still doesn't work. Also, how did you build that broadcom.net_server file, it doesn't get created when using the makefile in the source.

I've tried the past versions of the driver but they all do the same silly thing not able to ping other computers on the network.

Please do something!

I deleted the network settings and tried again.
This time the driver configures fine and reports ready. I can ping localhost however I cannot ping outside it, and yes I have the right ethernet cable, no conflicting ips, I don't know why it isn't working.

that device does exist however I don't want to install bone. The netserver compatibility code should work right? Could you please investigate the problem? I'd like this to work on R5.

thanks,

That's weird -- those PCI IDs are correct. It may be a problem with the (untested) net_server compatibility code. Could you tell me if there exists /dev/net/bcm440x/0? If there is, installing BONE should fix the problem.

Doesn't work :(

and let :

Drat. I thought I fixed that. There is some weird incompatibility between the Broadcom driver and the device_watcher server. If you open /boot/beos/system/boot/Bootscript, and delete these three lines:
if [ -e /dev/bus/pcmcia/sock/0 ]
then
launch $SERVERS/device_watcher
fi

It should work perfectly (although this disables PCMCIA hotplug support). I thought I fixed that... oh well. I'll try to get it in the next release.

I've installed the 440x driver (I think), but it doesn't seem to show in the network configuration, so i'm guessing it didn't work. Anyhow, are there any driver updates planned?

I have a MSI-KT6 Delta with a Broadcom 4401 onboard chip.

Not hurry though, I still have my trusty Intel NIC for now.
However, if/when you have time, then let me know.
That would be one less PCI slot being used :)
