That it says it's not supported is the funny part... the original BeOS browser, and the site for the rewrite of the OS is saying that it's not supported.
I'm not saying that the site should be hacked to bits to play nice with Net+, just that it was really strange to see that error.

Hi,
Just for completeness sake, I am posting the results of looking at the logfile here (thanks again for sending it!).
This monitor tells the system (via DDC/EDID) that it's preferred resolution is 1024x768 probably, which is the reason the nVidia graphics BIOS programmes the panel modeline in the GPU with that mode.
Because the BeOS driver doesn't yet have the capability to readout DDC/EDID itself, and also cannot program the panel modeline completely itself, it has to rely on what the cardBIOS programmed into the GPU. This is the reason the driver finds this panel to be a 1024x768 type.
There are maybe a few things that can be done at this time to 'overcome' this problem:
->connect the panel via a analog VGA cable: analog connections can be fully programmed by the driver.
->See if a new 'BIOS' can be flashed into the monitor, updating it's DDC/EDID info block to return the correct native resolution to the system.
OK, that's it.

Well, if you are sure you have a 1280x1024 native resolution, I'd love to see a logfile generated by the driver from your system.
Please modify the nv.settings file to do full logging, and Email me the resulting logfile (after a reboot). I will then be able to confirrm your native resolution, and maybe what goes wrong as well...

I have connected my monitor with the DVI connector. But the monitor supports 1280x1024 as highest resolution without scalling (thats what you call native resolution I suppose).
Support of 1280x1024 works well on Windows XP and Linux Debian. My graphic card is an Asus GeForce 5700 (NV36 rev a1) with 128 DDRRam and VGA, DVI and SVideo out. My monitor an Acer AL732 LCD.

Hi,
I don't know enough about the setup you use, but I can give some general pointers.
1.if you have connected your panel via a DVI cable, then the driver only supports upto and including the native resolution of your display. This is because (to my knowledge) the nvidia GPU's cannot scale down for DVI signals (only scale up).
I would conclude at this point that you did this, and your panels native resolution is 1024x768?
2. if you connected your panel via a analog VGA cable, then the driver lets you set any resolution (yet). This means you could set a resolution beyond your panels native one. IT depends on the capability of your panel if this higher resolution would be working or not: my Ilyama monitor for instance, has a native resolution of 1024x768, but I can use it upto and including 1600x1200: the panel will correctly scale-down the picture to fit on the screen.
Of course a higher-than-native resolution will not be very good readable, because 'pixels vanish'.
Hope this sheds some light on your situation? If not, please hand out some more details ;-)

My problem is that I can't use a resolution greater than 1024x768. In Windows and Linux I can go up to 1280x1024. Has anyone a solution to this ?

Hi,
Thanks for the update! I'm glad it finally worked out for you. Indeed, the new GF will perform better than the old one, because of higher RAM and CORE speeds of the card internally. The differences will not be as high as you'd expect though: in newer cards the biggest speed and quality improvement sits in the 3D engine, which we do not use as you know.
A motherboard with AGP-FW capability however will improve speed further, for both the GF2 and GF-FX (probably). As you know the P2B board does not have this feature though.

Well, actually I don't know how this could work, but I guess it's remotely possible: I did not even look at supporting TVout inside the nVidia driver yet.
Of course, there's Axel Dorflers TVout add-on these days as well, which includes stuff from BeTVOut which maybe what you're using: I don;t know.
In the end however, you can just select TVout in the (a) ScreenPrefs app like any other (normal) mode, and the nVidia driver itself will set it for you: it's next up on the wishlist :-)
For now, you have to use Axel's solution or BeTVOut (if you're on nVidia).
Except for one other option you have: use VESA mode video: that way the graphicscard BIOS will select TVout mode for you (probably) if it finds a TVset but no VGA monitor connected at boot time. Of course, VESA mode is slow and low-featured..

Thanks for reply mmu_man and Rudolf, ok i understand now :), one thing Rudolf when i was working with BeOS R5 i used BeTVOut (it works great ^_^) but with Zeta RC2(&RC3) the TV output works without BeTVOut, i mean that i install Zeta and connect the PC to TV and there is TV Output, but the image at TV isn't very good so i'll have to use BeTVOut again :).

On Neo the home folders have been removed for (amongst other things) the graphics drivers.
I just tested creating them by hand and then you can still install a driver there (maybe a direct install will create the folders as well though).
If you install the driver in the home place instead of the system place, the driver takes precedence over the system installed driver.
BTW: Are you using BeTVOut on Zeta that you have(had) TVout working?

~/config is where *you* are supposed to put things, /system is reserved for the OS vendor.The difference is the ones in ~/config aren't used if you boot in safe mode.

Hi Rudolf, first of all thank you for this awesome driver ;), and second i've a question, i've downloaded the latest version (0.30) and i want to update on Zeta RC3 but i've a question, i've seen that the driver is installed into /boot/home/config (i don't remember exactly but it's under home directory) but in Zeta RC3 i've seen that the driver is installed on /boot/system/addons ... etc, so... Where must i install the driver? under home directory or under system... oh! another thing, in RC2 i updated the drivers with the install script and after that zeta doesn't output to TV (i've a TNT2-M64) maybe was because it was installed in home directory, i don't know. Greetings.

Not sure if you are running a P2B-D, if so, it only does agp 2x to my knowledge (I have one too, just bought new board because I wanted better agp support now that we have our fancy shmancy agp busman driver :)
Also, I found that my new mobo w2as agp 4x/8x ONLY! Would not support 3.3v video cards. I put my 2x/4x old radeon in and it would not load. Put my new NVidia card in and it worked.

I have command the card in a reseller !
I give you feedback when i get it.
The last probleme i get with a FX5200 is i have tested a generic card not an asus and in fact when i see in details i see writing in the doc AGP 8x,4x and not 2x that why my PC Beep when i have tested this card without result.
I think the Asus 9520 Magic work sure because it' writed on web site and it's the card you have.

You're kidding! Well, I guess you are not :-/
Anyway: you are right: check the cards to support AGP2x and you should be fine. (Are you sure you placed the card tightly into the slot??? It must not tilt up in the slot AT ALL, or the connections fail...)
If a card only supports AGP4x and AGP8x it's a AGP V3-only card. I did not know these existed in this way. Our mainboard is a V1 mainboard, which supports AGP 1x and AGP 2x modes. The voltages on this board as 3.3Volts if I remember correctly. Newer mainboards have 1.5Volts AGP slots.
I do know that older AGP cards are 3.3Volt only, so they nolonger work in new mainboards. An example would be nVidia's TNT1 cards. TNT2-M64 still supports both 1.5 and 3.3Volts (as far as I know).
The FX5200 I have here as ID 322 (Devices). It's a ASUS "V9520 Video Suite". "Packs Superior Innovations for FX5200" it says on the box. On the back of the box it says: "Complete AGP interface support: AGP 8x/4x/2x. So 2x is explicitly mentioned here!
Well, that's about it.. Please keep me posted on new results you get!

I can return the card but what card have you ? i think your FX5200 card work on x2,x2,x8 i see some card have this features.

Good point: that power supply :-)
Anyway: I especially bought a Papst (high speed / low noise / ball-bearing) seperate 12cm fan myself with this thought of proper air convection at bearable sound levels, but I always find myself 'computing' instead of breaking-up the case :)
Maybe I'll have a look at such a supply instead: that would at least not disrupt the 'official' route of the air flow inside the tower.

Hi,
I'm afraid I'm still not clear on this. There's one user who reported with a NV40 (which is a FX6800) to me, which triggered me implementing recognition for those 25 new cards. Unfortunately I didn't get this particular AGP card working: apparantly something was changed.
This means I will need to get my hands on such a card in order to (maybe) get it going, or the linux people have to beat me to it :)
Info is still a bit sketchy as well, we have (AFAIK):
NV40 - AGP FX6800
NV41 - ???
NV43 - PCIe 6600 (real PCIe chipset)
NV45 - PCIe 6800 (agp FX6800 plus PCIe to AGP bridge by nVidia)
These cards I don't know of, if they will work at this time.
nVidia also released some PCIe cards with older chipsets:
NV34 - PCX 5300 (based on FX5200 plus nVidia AGP bridge)
NV35 - PCX 5900 (based on FX5900 plus nVidia AGP bridge)
NV36 - PCX 5750 (based on FX5750 plus nVidia AGP bridge)
I expect these types of cards to work OK. One user reported in a 5300 which it worked flawlessly.

The PCIe cards I mentioned that have a AGP bridge should also work with the AGP busmanager, but I don't have any confirmation (or denial) of that yet. The AGP bridges are overclocked V3 8x bridges running at 16x. It should be 'transparant' to the busmanager as being a standard V3 8x bridge, as the overclocking is a hardware only thing (the software side behaves as 8x if all is right).
People having a PCIe card with AGP bridge are encouraged to test the busmanager and send me a nVidia driver logfile with that attempt!

If all is right I will get my hands on at least one PCIe card myself in the near future (thanks to YellowTab, I hope) which I will then thoroughly test.
Of course such a test is still very marginal, as there are so many different types of cards, as you all know.
Anyway: if anyone has more info or corrections for what I already know (see 'specs' above), or has tested the 0.30 driver on such a card, please post here or let me know by mail: we all benefit from that...

5V isn't enough, unfortunately.
When i tried to avoid resistors or/and stabilitrones (Zener-diodes) i did following trick - connected fan between 12V and 5V. I resulted in 7V and was sufficient for older fan types at least. But this tip may be unsuitable for coolers with rotating speed control, as 3-rd wire potential may be wrong and, who knows, may damage motherboard.
Next tip for ATX-towers and slot1 CPUs. Buy Power Supply with big fan (12 cm/5 inch?) placed at bottom of supply inside computer case (in opposition to those placed at back side of case).
Instead special separate computer-case fan.
Power supplies with that type of fans are very silent and provide very proper air convection from slot1-packages (in most cases such big fan happens to be just some centimeters over CPU(s))

Thanks for the hint: I could certainly try that. It's probably something I'd try before getting a saw and cut-out a piece of the PC's cover above the CPU's and then place a 12cm fan on top of it (that's lying next to my monitor now for oh, say about 6 months :)
I do have to pointout that one of my CPU's is already at 40 degrees Celcius as it is now. On the other hand, before your previous tip it was running at about 65 degrees , 70 degrees on hot summer days (and still be stable)
BTW: if I put plain 5V on the fans, do you think they would keep rotating or quit entirely? (that would make then real pleasant to listen to ;-)

I've got the ASUS V9520 video suite in that system. (FX5200 with 128 Mb and vivo). I've also some tested other (older) cards though. Seriously, I think all cards upto FX5950 should work OK, as long as the system's powersupply can deliver enough power.
I can't guarantee this all though :-)
The CPU's are SLOT1, 2x P3 @ 500Mhz. These days the system is relatively slow compared to newer ones of course, but (apart from the CPU blower noise) it's still a nice system to work on.

Hi Simon,
Coldstarting NVidia cards is something that has never before been done outside of Windows AFAIK. It should work on TNT2 upto and including GeForce FX5950 cards, but only on analog connected screens currently. It looks like the latest cards have a new system for coldstarting, that I didn't figure out yet.
If you look at all existing BeOS graphicsdrivers, both Be's and others, you'll find that upto now only the Be Matrox and Haiku Matrox drivers are capable of doing this 'feature': Haiku's driver does it on G100-G550 for instance.
So, let's see what it could do for you now or in the future.
---
1. If a driver can coldstart a card, this means that the card can be initialized from scratch without it's BIOS ever being executed. Interesting uses for this are:
- Multiple cards in a system: only the primary card (as noted in the system BIOS setup) gets inited by it's BIOS. All other cards cannot be used by their driver, unless that driver coldstarts the card.
Interesting uses for this could be multiple cards displaying desktops, or using some secondary (or 3rd, or 4rd) card to display video via a Video consumer node (you could select the card in the mediaprefs just like for instance a firewire camera).
- Using cards in PPC hardware. Most cards outthere have a X86 BIOS, which cannot be exectured on a PPC machine. If a driver is able to coldstart the card itself (instead of relying on it's BIOS to do it), such a card will work on such hardware.
Note however that other stuff has to be done as well to make the driver work, most notably subject is endianess (little/big). The nVidia driver will not yet work on PPC because I have not set that up.
- Suspend/resume functionality. If you suspend your system into a deep sleep mode, power will be cut from most components in the system, including for the graphicscard. If you want to resume working, it's not enough to simply restore power: you also need to re-init the card from scratch, and, the BIOS won't get exectuted even if the card is primary in the system.

2. Some interesting details get known (on implementing or use) which might help to solve trouble with cards at some point. Examples:
- The driver now knows which RAM and CORE speeds are used on every card outthere (that is coldstarted). If a card has trouble working, we can verify if the speeds are about correct, or if we need to fix that somehow.
- The driver might init some stuff now, which is possibly forgotten on some cards BIOSes. This could fix trouble also sometimes.
------
OK, I guess this is about it. As you probably guessed by now, coldstarting is something that is not needed if a card is primary in a X86 system while it's BIOS is fully OK.
It's more my personal interest that I decided to add it now, as I can't wait to play with secondary cards at some point in time :-)
Though of course, it was one of the main lacking things in the driver now, which just could fix some trouble for some users outthere. So it 'had' to be done.

Hi there,
I want to make sure you all know that if you use a CVS version of my driver beyond 0.22, you should also 'install' the new nv.settings file!
If you don't, the new driver will attempt to coldstart your card, which might not work for you (yet). While it should work on most cards, it will NOT work if you have a laptop panel or DVI panel connected.
(the option is called 'usebios' in the settings file: 'usebios false' will let the driver attempt a coldstart..)

I will release the new driverversion soon, the coldstart stuff is almost complete (panels will stay non-functional if you use this 'option' for now).

I guess it will just work: over here I am using a GeForceFX5200 (NV34) on the exact same motherboard. Looks like at least that newer card can accept relative high-voltage signals from the old AGP port, and I would expect all cards being still compatible to that?
The BX chipset can do AGP2x BTW (AGP V1.0). No FW though, so the busmanager will not speedup graphics on that machine yet.
If you would install the busmanager, AGP2x would be activated. The cardhardware and motherboard hardware do some 'hardware handshaking' when you hit the power-on button, that will result in the graphicscard reporting it can do AGP V2.0 features, instead of AGP3 features: so upto and including AGP4x and FW (probably). Because the motherboard max can do AGP2x and no FW, AGP2x without FW will be selected by the busmanager.

hi,
I need to change card, i'm interested by NVidia MX4000 chipset (card without fan) but my motherboard is an old Asus P2B-D (Chipset 440BX AGP 1x) can i use the card with MX4000 Chipset (AGP 8x) or it' risqued because voltage or power getting on AGP Bus ?

I'd _love_ to know if AGP works (these cards internally still use AGP which should increase speed even more than on official AGP..)

Hi,
Thanks for the report!
The good news is that the latest driverversion (in CVS, get it from the Haiku build factory if possible) should already support your card (and a number of other new cards).
The driver recognizes your card (now) as a :
Nvidia GeForce PCX 5300 PCIe.
Please test the current driver (CVS version is 0.28) and let me know if it INDEED works!!

Hello!
I have a NVIDIA Quadro4 280 NVS PCI-E card installed in a HP XW-8200 workstation. The HP workstation is running a Xeon 2.8Ghz processor on an Intel E7525 chipset using SATA drives. (I must say, I was suprised that BeOS 5 would even install.) Currently, the only video options I can get to work are those in standard VESA mode.
