Hi everybody. A few days ago I installed succesfully a Zeta 1.2.1 on an Acer Aspire 1501 LMi. I can use the Internet using a wire to the Ethernet Port. I would like to use its wifi too. It has a Broadcom-BCM4306-802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller. Could I use it with this driver, or using what driver? But it´s a bit extrange, because my Zeta knows that I have this WLAN Card, I can see it in the Zeta PC-Info, even I can select it to create a new network, but it never finds a network (where I know that there are one), so I have thought that... maybe with this driver... or doing what to use my card correctly? Well, thank you very much. Bye :)

After putting my wireless card back in now that I'm home for the summer again, and comparing with when I had wired access at school, I've figured out what's going on...with two different computers now I've used this Netgear MA311 with this driver, and though it works quite well otherwise, if I'm listening to music while surfing the net, whenever part of a page loads, the sound skips pretty massively. I surfed all year wired without this happening, and I'm on a newer, faster machine now too. Anybody else having this? Is there a workaround?
Thanks,
Kev

Hello PinkPanther,
Your USB stick is a 802.11g adapter so it's not a Prism chipset and it doesn't work with this driver.

Hello,
I have a Medion WLAN Set named 40900 with two USB sticks. Many forums say that the USB sticks have a Prism 2.5 or Prism 3 chipset like in this thread (German): http://www.emuleforum.net/t132043.html
So I loaded the driver and installed it as described in the manual but unfortunately I don't see a new device in the network preferences. I tried this with netserver and with bone but in Boneyard there isn't one also.
So now I have the suspicion that my stick hasn't a Prism 2.5/3 chipset because the information were weak in the internet. The thread named above says it were the same as this one: http://www.cybertantech.com/product/uw620-z.asp
Some also say it is originally a Z-Com but I don't know which one.
The FCC ID doesn't help me as well because it isn't listed at http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/ The FCC ID is btw "M4Y-XG701A".
Has anyone an idea how to find out which chipset is in my stick? Is there maybe a parameter of the driver or some other analyzing program to find that out?
I hope you can help me becauser I really would like to use BeOS R5 with internet on my WLAN computer.
Ciao, PinkPanther

Okay, I've known about BeOS since R5 was released, and just recently came into an old laptop (Dell Inspiron 3200 266XT) that I could put it on (my other computer's an old G3 iMac. I'm poor and have been living with antiquated machinery). I'm extremely excited, and have installed BeOS Max 31b1 on it successfully (well it is a little buggy, but I'm still stoked). My hopes were to use the WiFi in my house to connect the laptop to the internet. I found out it was possible and that some people were successfully using a D-Link DWL-650 which I'd found on ebay for cheap cheap cheap.
Little did I know that there were multiple revisions of the card, and the seller didn't post that information. I didn't know to look, didn't think there'd be a problem... but there is.
I tried to get it running first with NetServer (no luck at all) and then with Bone7a (a bit more luck). It seems that Bone is recognizing the card (I've tried this driver, orinico-cs, prism-cs) and this driver seems like it could work. Most info on the net seems to indicate this card has a Intersil Prism 2 through Intersil Prism 3 chipset, which this driver is supposed (I suppose since I've yet to get a card working) to support.
The problem is my card is DWL-650 RevP which I'm told has no onboard firmware. It expects the driver to provide it. Some Linux users were able to flash the firmware to the card at boot and have the card run successfully. I've even found copies of the firmware that they used (and the info on the card) here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?postid=829995#post829995
Is there any way to flash the firmware to the card at boot with BeOS? It may not work, it my fry the card. But, like the person who wrote the above link, it may work. I'm willing to risk it since it looks like I've already lost 15 bucks (like I said, I'm poor, I'm cheap.)
But with my yet limited knowledge of BeOS and Linux I'm not sure what they did to succeed or whether it's possible to do this with BeOS. I want to exhaust my options with this card before I fling another 15-20 bones on ebay for another card that may or may not have a flippin' quirk like the DWL-650.
There was another suggestion about this card, but I'm not sure it would work since it seems the card has no place to store the firmware. The suggestion was to use a windows machine to flash the firmware to the card and then set it up in BeOS.
These are the two options I can see (outside of using a different card). Could either of these options work? What would I need to do to get this working? Should I just throw this piece of junk card out?
Let me know what you all think. Thanks.
Reoul

Great thing... it works, just by installing the driver, setting up the config-file and skipping the add-on...
Would be great, if the configerations from the preference-panel would be accepted.

Using Zeta 1.1, and not having any luck with my D-Link 650 card.
I am trying to connect to the router without any encryption now, as I've tried both 64 and 128 bit encryption.
I deleted all the driver files that came with Zeta, and now am following the instruction of the website.
In Zeta however the link for the add-on doesn't exist. /boot/beos/system/add-ons/net_server
So where should the add-on be placed?

It is a known issue with DHCP and Linksys routers in BeOS. Other routers sometimes exhibit this, however Linksys ones tend to do it the most (nearly all the time). BONE usually helps, but doesn't always. Best to assign static IPs in BeOS.

edmundf: I don't see how this has anything to do with the hfa384x driver, which only affects wireless connections. I appreciate your well-intentioned comments though. Not sure what to tell you about your net_server DHCP problems - perhaps the driver for the Ethernet card you're using?
I've experimented a bit more with the problem in my earlier post. My home wireless network has a SSID 16 characters long, all upper and lowercase letters. In the config file for the 0.10 hfa384x_cs, I put in the exact SSID and the proper channel of 11. With this info, I got nothing via DHCP, but was able to manually configure an IP per my earlier entry.
Now I'm using a public wireless network at a local coffeehouse - Seattle ;) I had this astonishing success after removing both the SSID and the channel designation from the config file, i.e. those spots are now blank in the file. Is there some limitation on the length of the SSID?
This is obviously not so hot, esp. if one wishes to use a specific SSID in an area with multiple APs in range. The channel thing is frankly useless and confusing - any driver worth its salt should be able figure out the channel on its own. I'm going to try specifying SSID and leaving out the channel and see if that helps.

I don't know if this helps but I use a linksys router with cables and all by BeOS computers refuse to get a DHCP. When restarting network some numbers appear in the IP section ( like 0.0.10.10 ) .
So I manualy set an IP and subnetmask in the right range and all is working fine. This is on BeOS R5.03 pro with the netserver.
When I use the bone version DHCP works OK, I dont use bone because of the printer problems but that is an other story.

I'm using an Orinoco Gold card. It will not get an address via DHCP from both an 802.11b Netgear AP and an 802.11b D-Link one, but works fine if I manually assign an IP from the range designated in either AP. This has only been a problem with 0.9 and 0.10 as far as I can tell. Just to be sure it wasn't some strangeness in my OS, I did a fresh install of Dano and installed the hfa384x 0.10 version first thing. The error that comes up in the Terminal when I run Boneyard via CLI is:
Binder: Could not open /dev/misc/binder, No such file or directory

I purchased a D-Link DWL-650 wireless network card. I set is up as per the readme. cardctl ident gives meSocket 0:
product info: "D-Link", "DWL-650 Wireless PC Card RevP", "ISL37101P-10", "A3"
manfid: 0x000b, 0x7110
function: 6 (network)
I have enterered
card { # D-Link DWL-650 Wireless PC Card RevP ISL37101P-10 A3
version "D-Link", "DWL-650 Wireless PC Card RevP", "ISL37101P-10", "A3"
manfid: 0x000b, 0x7110
bind hfa384x_cs
}
into the pcmcia file.
The card shows up in boneyard under PhOS and Beos Max 3.1b1 as a hfa384x_cs as unset. If I try to set the card for dhcp or manual IP, it goes to debug console. I have tried both version 8 and version 10 with the same results. I have WEP set up for 64 bit.
D-Link says this is a prism 3 chipset.
Any help would be appreciated.

For marketing reason Orinoco produced two identical cards with identical drivers, but with some byte difference in internal card info - and different firmware. So Silver version supports only 64 bit WEP.
And there is NO WAY for simple user to figure out, why his laptop with such card don't work with 128-bit encrypted WIFI-networks - all managers do accept 128 bit key, card gets AP assotiation - but no connection.
I hate it...
Thus this driver aslo didn't work at my frends home networks here in US, and i suspected that something is wrong with driver. But at 3rd plays i got proper guess and googled the problem - see description in previous paragraph.
Also there was solution - which appeared not so trivial, as for internal ID change you need original card with original ORINOCO drivers. And there are lot of other obstacles.
But now it all is over, and i'm again fully connected
here:)
Thanks to author of this driver:)

Thank you Peter.
Working on a Soyo 9801 laptop. It took me forever to figure out the IRQ settings for the PCMCIA to work. Chipset is TI 1131. Had to set into legacy ISA, not Cardbus. Ok with that set, able to read PCMCIA Compact Flash cards. The Wifi card that I am using is the "AmbiCom", "WL1100C 802.11b CF-Card", "2.2"(can be bought at Fry's in the PDA section for $70 bucks). Mind you, it's a compact flash wifi card and you will need a CF to PCMCIA adapter card. Got it out of pure luck when I got my Casio BE-300 working with it. Looked at the specs, and it was Intersil Prism. So I had to see if I could get it to work in my Soyo. And sure enough it is. A donation will be coming your way.
Thank you again :)

Here is the deal... I have access to D-Link & thats about it. The models I have access to are not 650's but 650+, they are a TI based card. I have not been able to find any one using Wavelan or Prism chips any where. I'm quite frankly about to say screw it since I can't find any brand using these chipsets any more. They are supposedly the most popular chipsets but what manufacturers are using them & where in Tibet can you buy them? (If you catch my drift)

Jess.... I have two of these cards.
In short, one works, one dosen't.
The newer model you can buy off the store shelves bears the name DWL-650 but don't be fooled. As D-Link has a tendency to do, they changed the chipset without changing the model number. The new cards are cardbus, and no longer pcmcia -- I believe that was the explanation given on some of the linux mailing lists that I was going through trying to find answers.
The older models (ones with ear-shaped antenna) work beautifully. I picked up one of these on ebay for around $15USD (including shipping). This thing works like a champ with this driver, and has allowed me to enjoy the spring time breeze on my balcony as I happily hack away. There's something oddly satisfying about coding on my couch too.
The only complaints I have are..
I wish there was some form of an installer or a GUI preference app. One that supported multiple configurations and let you switch between them.
I'd really like to see a signal strenght meter. If the driver provides this kind of functionality, could I have the necessary headers / docs please? :-)

AFAIK Intersil (now Conexant) is (was?) the only wireless chipset manufacturer with available datasheets for their products.
Atheros, Atmel, Broadcom, Intel, Texas Instruments, Realtek, ADMTek... do not release any usefull informations. Some of them provide some Linux support under GPL but with object files or very little amount of technical informations, so it will be difficult to use information to create new driver for BeOS. May be I'am wrong...
So, this driver support and will only support the Intersil Prism 2/2.5/3 chipset family.

I also have a SMC2835W wifi pccard. It has a prism3 chipset, and is based on the IEEE 802.11g standard. I didn't manage to get it up and running in Zeta.
Thank you Patrick Lafarguette.
Regards,
Frank Paul Silye

Although I have seen reports of this working on belkin 802.11b cards it does not seem to work with a v3(UK) card. I cannot track down information on what chipset this card uses at the moment but will continue to try and find out. I have emailed belkin support. The card in question is not a belkin 802.11b/g card.
