So instead of giving you the cddb, it gives you the code so you can put that in another application ?

It's a tool to calculate the CDDB sum of an audio CD in order to then use the sum to fetch information from a CDDB server like freedb.org. It doesn't do by itself much -- you'll have to run it manually from Terminal.
It's useful if you create shell applications that need the CDDB information from a CD. I guess that's about it. :)

Does it run automatically when I insert the cd, or do I have to go out of my way to even use it.
