Are you new to BeOS? Or maybe you stumbled across by accident, and you're confused by all the strange uses of the word "Be". Well, here's the scoop.
BeOS is a slick, well-crafted, user-friendly operating system designed from the ground up for performance. BeOS was first made by a company called Be, Inc., hence the name. It's very fast, extremely stable, and for most people boots in under 15 seconds. Best of all, most BeOS versions are free!
Be, Inc. has been closed for several years now, but the community is keeping the spirit alive. You will find several places where you can download BeOS distros on BeBits and elsewhere.
Most of those distros are modifications of the original BeOS as distributed by Be, Inc. (for free) before they closed up shop. Feel free to download them and play around.
In the mean time, the community has been hard at work building on top of and/or replacing the original BeOS. For more information about these efforts, follow the links below.
Haiku OS is an open source reimplementation of the original BeOS.
Zeta is currently the only commercial BeOS distribution.
Cosmoe is attempting to rebuild the BeOS experience on top of Linux.
